Born on January 23, 1897, in Cuttack, Orissa Subhas Chandra Bose is one of the greatest Indian leaders and Freedom Fighter. He is the founder of the Indian National Army(INA) which fought against western powers in World War II. He was a true patriotic leader and an ideal leader for the youth of India.

He was a part of a very big family of 14 children. He was the 9th child of Prabhavati Dutt Bose and Janakinath Bose. His family was Kayastha Bengali and his father was an advocate by profession. He was expelled from Presidency college while graduating as he actively participated in the Nationalist movement.

In,1919 to prepare for Civil Service Exams bose was sent to Cambridge, England. Though he cleared the civil service examination in 1920, he resigned and returned after listening about the national strife.

He was highly influenced by the teachings of Vivekanand and Ramkrishna, who laid emphasis that religion in one’s life is more important than anything. Their teachings played a crucial role in building his true patriotic nature.

After returning he joined Mahatma Gandhi in the Non-cooperation movement. On, his advice Bose started working under Chitranjan Das who later became his Mentor.

He used to edit the newspaper “Forward” published by his mentor and even published his own newspaper “Swaraj”.He was actively involved in aggressive and violent activities against the Britishers.

He had active tours inside and outside the prison and the government always suspected him and his supporters against the violence against and rallies against them.

He had a difference in opinion with Gandhi and started getting away from him. In,1938 he was elected the President of National Congress and re-elected in 1939. He resigned later on because of a lack of Gandhi’s support.

He then left Congress and established the Forward Bloc with his supporters but was disbanded because of his imprisonment in 1940. He was kept on house arrest in his house from which he escaped in disguise on January 26, 1941, and eventually reached Germany.

From Berlin, he and his supporters broadcasted the Azad Hind Radio in various languages. In May 1943, Bose reached Tokyo, Japan, and with the help of the Japanese government established the Azad Hind Fauz(INA). The army comprised Indian soldiers captured by the Japanese army and was free from any bias based on religion, caste, and gender.

With the defeat of Japan Bose’s funds and resources were seized. He died in a plane crash while traveling from Taipei, Taiwan in a Japanese plane. His slogans motivated the youth to actively participate in the freedom movement.
