Narendranath Datta, born on January 12, 1863, was popularly known as Swami Vivekananda. He was a famous Indian Hindu monk who established the Ramakrishna Mission.

He is one of the earliest spiritual leaders who combined Indian Spiritualism and Western Materialism and showed the world that both can exist in conjunction with each other.

Born to an upper-middle-class Bengali Kayastha family his father was an attorney at the Calcutta High Court. Bhubaneshwar Devi his mother was a religious and pious housewife.

His father Vishwanath Datta made him attend a western-style university as he was a brilliant student. While studying he became manifested with Western culture, philosophy, Christianity, and science.

His parents played a major role in his upbringing. His father’s progressive attitude and his mother’s spiritualism bending both influenced and shaped his character and thinking. Under his Guru Ramakrishna Paramahansa, he joined the Brahmo Samaj.

The famous social reformer fought against social evils prevalent in society at that time. Some of these social evils were Child marriage, Widow Remarriage and he was also against illiteracy among the women and lower caste.

Vivekananda was highly influenced and motivated by his guru Ramkrishna’s teachings. His Guru was the source of his enlightenment who helped him find answers he was looking for all his life. Assisting mankind and their upliftment is the only and best way to serve God.

In the year 1897 Vivekanand and his other disciples established the Ramakrishna Mission. The motto of this religious organization is one’s salvation and rendering service to the world.

Through his organization, Vivekanand introduced Vedanta and Yoga to western culture. He and his disciples used to spend hours in meditation and religious asceticism.
