On 7th May 1861, Rabindranath Tagore was born in Calcutta, West Bengal. He is a globally acclaimed poet, writer, and musician. He introduced new prose and verse forms and the use of vernacular language into Bengali Literature, giving it new heights and recognition in the world.
He was an eminent creative artist of the early 20th century and his works are still considered a masterpiece in the Literature world.
Born to religious reformer parents Debendranath Tagore and Sarada Devi his family was actively involved in Independence Movement in India. His father used to invite famous musicians, poets, and literates to his home to teach his children music and literature. Tagore’s eldest sibling Dwijendranath was a philosopher and poet.
His brother Satyendranath was the first elite Indian appointed Indian Civil Service. His brother Jyotirindranath was also a famous musician, composer, and playwright. His sister Swarankumari was also a noted novelist.
He was homeschooled and taken care of by servants because his mother died when he was very young. He had a keen interest in literature and wrote his first poem when he was 8 years old.
Under the pen name of “Bhanusimha”(“Sun Lion”) he published his first works at the age of 16 which the authorities later seized as the long-lost classics.
His father wanted him to become a barrister and sent him to study in London in 1877 but was called back in 1880. During his stay, he matured as a literary genius and published poems and his work Manasi.
In 1891 he was sent to East Bengal to manage his Zamindari business in Shilaidah and Shazadpur where he stayed in his near Padma River. He was quite sympathetic to lower class people and they became a source of his literary work in the later work.
In his poems and stories, he has successfully portrayed their lives and problems generally ignored by society.
In,1912 he established Santiniketan an experimental school with a marble floor that aimed at developing students’ creativity. The school is now known as Visva-Bharati University and is one of the renowned Indian universities.
During his stay in Santiniketan, he wrote his Internationally recognized masterpiece “Gitanjali” for which he was awarded Noble Price in literature in 1913. Tagore was also awarded a knighthood in 1915 which he discredited against the protest of the Jallianwalla Bagh Massacre in Amritsar.
