Indian economist, writer, philosopher, Nobel Prize winner and gifted with one of the brightest mind Amartya Sen is a name that needs no introduction. He was born on 3rd November 1933 at Santiniketan and was named by Indian legend Rabindranath Tagore. His father Ashutosh Sen was a chemistry professor at Dhaka University and his Amita Sen was the daughter of Kshiti Mohan Sen.His family was highly educated and influenced his education and growth.

He obtained a BA in economics from Presidency College and then due to Oral Cancer treatment moved to Cambridge. He obtained a second degree in economics from Trinity College, Cambridge. After that, he further obtained M.A. and P.hd in Economics.

He taught economics in many colleges in India and overseas. In 1956 he was made the head of the department of economics at Jadavpur University, Calcutta where he holds the honor of being the youngest chairman to date.

He further increased his horizon after studying philosophy at Trinity College. He got a P.hd in Philosophy and teaches in both economics and philosophy.

To highlight the issues relevant to justice and equality he wrote his first book “Collective Choices and Social Welfare”. His other noted works include “More than 100 Women are missing” a series of essays in which he has successfully highlighted the issue related to gender inequality.

He was bestowed with a Nobel Prize lecture for his wonderful work “The possibility of Social Choice“.

He is credited for devising many successful methods that can help to measure poverty which further helped in improving the economic condition of the poor class. As Sen had spent his childhood days in Bengal he had witnessed the Bengal Famine in 1943 which had deep roots and impact on his mind.

Based on this topic he wrote the book “Poverty and Famines: An Essay on Entitlement and Deprivation ” in (1981). In his book, he showed various cases of famines that food supplies were always in abundance but other factors like fewer wages, unemployment, high food prices led to famine in certain areas.

His most significant and noted work which won him Nobel Prize was “Development as Freedom”. He even won the highest civilian award ‘Bharat Ratan’ for his contribution to society. His works have highly influenced the Government in the world facing a food crisis.
