When Did This Celebration Begin

October 1987 was the time when the UK had the first celebration of Black History Month. This year has other importances too coincidentally, i.e the 150th anniversary of the emancipation of the Caribbean and the 25th anniversary of an organization named African Unity which focuses on making African States advanced. The credit for organizing the Black History Month in the United Kingdom goes to an analyst from Ghana named Akyaaba Addai-Sebo.

He was the coordinator of special projects under the GLC and made sure to get the collaboration underway. On 1st October when Dr. Maulana Karenga was invited to state how black people contributed to history, political life and a lot more, it was declared officially that October is the Black History Month in the United Kingdom.

Black History Month has gone through a lot of criticisms too after getting introduced. Many institutions happily accepted the celebration but there were a lot more who did not. Many institutions refused to show respect towards black people’s contributions and criticized them as mere slaves.

There was another criticism too, many black people frowned on having just a month for the celebration of their history. They claimed that they are a part of the history of the UK and they do not need any month to celebrate that, it must happen throughout the year.

The celebration of Black History Month in the UK and US differs because it is believed that the culture of people belonging to both countries differs. It is believed that their histories differ too.
